Well this hasn’t gone at all like I expected. 2020 has been an absolute shake up compared to where we saw ourselves only a year ago. We have seen Kobe die in a helicopter accident, a pandemic sweep the nation, 30+ million people go unemployed, riots all across the country uniting people but leading to violence in the streets. You would think someone had written a script for 2020 and wanted to make the most bad ass documentary they could so they needed to throw everything at us in one year. I am for sure an eternal optimist; however the events throughout this year just have me scratching my head. In 2010 I graduated from high school and had it all planned out. 2 kids and married with a nice house set as my 10 year goal….hahahaha 18 year old me is adorable. If this year has shown me anything it is that all you can really do is wake up each day and try to be a little better, treat people with respect, and try to make the world a more habitable place. In 10 years I hope to look back on this like I am now on my high school plans and laugh…but that will be hard. People have lost their lives this year in some very strange ways. The country as a whole is rather shaken. Healthcare workers who are underpaid are putting themselves at risk to treat people they don’t even know. Law enforcement officers who are underpaid are putting themselves at risk to contain the violence one of their own caused and to allow people their right to protest. Teachers who are underpaid are being required to teach in a format they hardly understand themselves to try to make this world a better place through influencing our youth. While these are only a few examples of humanity still working together, I know there are many more. The world has decided that we need to be so split right now making everything about race, religion, or politics…when it comes down to it, the vast majority of us don’t want to see another human suffer. While we may have different approaches on how to get there, the end goal is to help move ourselves forward as a society. This weekend in the media you saw protests, riots, and anger…rightfully so. Everyone who I have talked to on any side of the fence agrees what happened to that man by an officer who is supposed to protect us was wrong. What you didn’t see are the officers working daily to protect us. What you didn’t see (potentially) is our country launching its first human occupied rocket from US soil in the last decade. What you didn’t see are our healthcare workers still treating the patients they can because we are still in the middle of a pandemic. There are so many things going on in the media right now that I would be surprised if this even comes across anyone’s newsfeed. However, in case someone does see this I want to make it known that the majority of us are still noticing the great things about humanity; the protests that are peaceful and speaking meaning such as in Denver or Flint. 2020 is now officially half way over. In 6 months the world has been turned on its head. We as a society are going to take quite some time to recover from this. It will be shocking to see mass crowds again and not have to worry about a pandemic. One day maybe we will get past the point of wrongful murders in the streets. Some day we may even be able to protest without violence and still make our point. Until then, I will keep waking up each day and trying to make this world a better place. Remember your neighbor. Be thankful if your family is safe. Stay strong in these crazy times because the majority of us are scared right now and just need a community to stay strong with us. While 18 year old me never could have seen this coming. 28 year old me will never forget how this has changed us. With all of that being said, 38 year old me will hopefully have many more lessons to look back on and laugh about. Please reach out if you ever need anything. While times are crazy right now, remember, only you are responsible for your actions. Don’t blame it on a cause. You made the choice to either be violent or not. You made the choice to wear a mask or not. You made the choice offer a helping hand or not. Be the person we are all looking for in these crazy times and maybe we can make it out of this a little quicker. Stay safe out there humanity…we still have a long race ahead of us.
