What a crazy time we are living in…I never thought 2020 would start out with a worldwide pandemic, a shortage of toilet paper, and this social distancing but hey it is time to make the best of our current situation right? None of the ideas here are anyone’s but mine and it doesn’t reflect anyone else…these are just my thoughts as I am on the 2nd weekend of staying inside and making sure to try to stay 6ft away from everyone I can. First, I know some of the people on my feed will say COVID isn’t as big of a deal as the media is making it out to be. For those people I would like to combat your argument of the flu killing more people annually by saying that we will never know the extent of what COVID-19 could have been. If they had allowed March Madness to continue, didn’t sure down events like SXSW, and kept all the restaurants open for people to mingle our situation would be much different. These lockdowns that seem unnecessary to some will play a huge role in not allowing our hospitals to be overrun with patients and will allow us to return to business as usual much sooner. That being said, it is still going to take some time for all of this dust to settle. The market has tanked, the majority of food and beverage industry workers are on hold, and other “non-essential” businesses are taking a back seat. While I am confident that in time everything will level out because this is AMERICA, I see a grim 2-6 months coming up. This is just a realistic view point of us still not accepting that this virus is going to hit hard here in the homeland. Even 2 weeks ago I was playing this off and didn’t know, however you see more and more healthcare worker posts (maybe that is just my Facebook algorithm feeding me what I click on) and fewer posts about how this is an overreaction now. However, I still see people hanging out with their friends, posts about people on spring break, and other things just showing they don’t quite get the concept. To give a break down, social distancing is less about you and more about who you will then come into contact with. While most of you would be able to handle the virus, you may have a friend that has a grandma with COPD and heart failure that is susceptible and you’re putting her at risk. This isn’t about your family, or your friends, this I about our country as a whole. When you go and interact with people you’re putting everyone they interact with at risk as well. That is why you see so many people posting about “essential” vs “non-essential” because if our hospitals get flooded and we have a shortage of people to treat them, that is when the real trouble will start. All of this being said, I do believe this is a great time for us as humans to help each other out. For those of you who don’t know I am a physical therapist who also bar tends and helps run two podcasts. I keep myself busy and in a time like this there have been a large drop in patients and you aren’t able to go get a drink hardly anywhere. I wanted to write this blog for a little education and to offer my services/skills. If you are out there with a lot of free time and are now realizing you should have done something about your back pain, or that you’ve really wanted to start a podcast, or just realized you have all this extra vodka but no mixers (or so you think), please reach out as I can help with all of these problems! In a time like this I would love to talk about what inspires you and not how COVID is running through our country. Let’s talk about your ambitions and see how we can utilize this time to grow together as opposed to grow apart. I know they are focusing on #socialdistancing but what can’t we be #isolatedtogether. Sorry this post was all over the place but to sum it up really quick, stay isolated, it isn’t about you, give us about a month of being compliant so we can be our of this thing sooner. Trust your healthcare providers and their knowledge, if your skills are working on cars, putting in HVAC, or serving tables, trust me you wouldn’t want most Drs doing those things so let them utilize their medical knowledge to help you/your family. Finally, please reach out if I can help you with pain, exercise accountability, drink making, or podcasting. Thanks to everyone reading this! See ya next time and stay safe out there.
